Travel: What's My 'Why'?

Updated: Mar 4

Hey, fellow wanderers! Dan here, mapping out the initial steps of my upcoming adventure. Picture this: me, a world map, and a whole lot of excitement. The plan? Reconnect with friends, some of whom I haven't seen in 20 years.

What's My 'Why', Why Travel?

But hold up – as I check out the towns they call home, a few thoughts pop into my head. What exactly am I gonna do while I'm there? I want to see other countries and cultures too, but how? What do I want to achieve in my travels? And that, my friends, leads me to the grand question: What's my 'why'?

What Matters To Me?

Travel has been my lifelong dream, a constant companion on this journey called life. Now that the stars have aligned, and my chance to explore has finally arrived, I'm hit with the realisation that I need to figure out why I want to embark on this adventure. Is it just about landing in a country and ticking it off a checklist? Nah, that's not my style. I'm all about experiences and connections – feeling the vibe of a place, living like a local, expanding my horizons, and meeting everyday people.

Time For A List

My 'why' (or realistically, ‘more than one why') needed to be more than a vague notion of wandering aimlessly, hoping for magical experiences to plop into my lap. It was time to jot down things that truly interested me.

  • Photography and Videography: Eight years ago, I picked up a camera, and it's been a love affair ever since. Initially drawn to landscapes, I've expanded to all things photo and video. Capturing moments is my jam. Connecting with other like minds along the way, for sure!

  • Swimming in Nature's Wonders: A serious back injury at 17 made me appreciate the healing power of water. Now, I'm on a quest to swim in oceans, lakes, rivers – you name it. Cenotes in Mexico and waterfalls in Thailand? Count me in.

  • Trying New Foods: I'm not your typical foodie, but hey, it's time to slow down and savour the flavours. No more mindless munching – this trip is about experiencing and understanding the relationships people have with food across the globe.

  • Cultural Bathing Experiences: Yep, you read that right. Cultural bathing experiences are on my radar. Inspired by travel podcasts, I've learned about various bathing customs worldwide. Communal, segregated, solo, clothed, nude – why not take the plunge into the unknown?

More Like Guidelines Than Rules

These 'whys' aren't meant to define my entire journey; they're more like friendly guidelines nudging me toward awesome experiences. They're my starting point, a compass to guide me through uncharted territories. So, join me as I slow down, dive into the unknown, and let these 'whys' unfold into even more incredible adventures.
